About

Sovereign Bodies is a series profiling Native women health leaders that positions the struggle for reproductive justice and bodily sovereignty squarely within the fight for human rights. These women are changing the conversation for future generations. Each has dedicated their lives to fighting against violence against women, gender, racial, and health inequalities.

reproductive human rights
Their work addresses the ways that the U.S. federal government and The Indian Health Service have fallen short in serving their communities.  Native women are often denied access to rape kits, emergency contraception, or quality and/or safe contraceptive pills.
Many Native American women face the same barriers to quality health care as low-income and rural women across the country, with added challenges resulting from geographic isolation, racial discrimination, displacement and cultural trauma. Native women experience disproportionate levels of violence—especially sexual violence.
As the country has grown increasingly polarized in the past twenty years, issues around “reproductive health” have become conflated with controversial abortion politics, and many use the terms interchangeably. Reproductive health, rights, and justice, however, encompasses a far broader range of concerns than women’s health. The struggle for reproductive justice is a growing movement to ensure that women have the same access to quality care—regardless of their socioeconomic status, geographic region, or cultural heritage.

The project is produced by Incite Pictures, co-presented by Vision Maker Media, and is a companion to Young Lakota, the feature documentary.
